Specimen 10: Forbidden Biogenetic Archive from an Alternate World

Studio Cipsi introduces a speculative fiction narrative through the launch of SPECIMEN 10: Forbidden Biogenetic Archive, the first publication from the Freakie X Lab project. The book is constructed as an archival document that, within Cipsi’s fictional universe, was published in 2095 as a high-level internal report. Combining graphic design, science fiction, and the format of pseudo-scientific records, the project invites readers to enter an alternate world that never experienced World War I or II.

In Studio Cipsi’s imagined timeline, the absence of major global conflict accelerates rapid and evenly distributed economic growth. Yet this development triggers uncontrolled exploitation of natural resources and leads to planetary ecological collapse. At the height of the crisis, nations establish a planetary biotechnology initiative that gives rise to Freakie X Lab, a scientific institution tasked with developing a synthetic organism called Freakie Gen. These organisms are designed to restore damaged ecosystems.

Specimen 10 is positioned as an archival volume circulated only within a restricted scientific circle in 2095. The book contains documentation of ten Freakie Gen specimens, assembled through taxonomic records, field illustrations, fragments of technical reports, and research observations that were never intended for public release. Studio Cipsi reconstructs these materials as artefacts accessible to contemporary audiences, as if opening an archive that was not meant to be viewed.

The book presents reproductions of “2095 documents,” classified notes from research teams, anatomical illustrations, as well as behavioral notes and speculative ecological interpretations. Each page blends fictional scientific language with visual approaches that mirror biological documentation formats. SPECIMEN 10 serves as a window into the universe of Freakie X Lab and opens possibilities for the future expansion of alternative scientific narratives.

Founded in 2020 in Jakarta, Studio Cipsi works as a collective-based graphic design studio. They developed this project after observing strong public interest in the Freakie X Lab universe at PPP and YKABF. The book they introduced at PPP functions as a prequel, while Specimen 10 becomes the first official edition. Through this project, Cipsi explores how far a design studio can build an IP that grows from an initial idea into a broader worldbuilding structure.

The plan ahead is to continue the archival series and further expand the Freakie X Lab universe. In this way, Specimen 10 becomes an early step toward developing a continuously evolving narrative within Studio Cipsi’s speculative fiction project.
