Joyfull Studio: A Three Dimensional Sense of Story
Joyfull Studio was founded in 2023 out of a simple restlessness. Romy Tomyando saw that many brands wanted to appear premium, yet had not found a creative partner capable of fully combining storytelling, artistic detail, and 3D technology. From that point, he began to design a studio focused on visual quality, research, and precise execution. “The desire was simple, to create visual work that is not only good, but also has feeling,” he said.
In its formation, Joyfull Studio was not built alone. Together with Ageng Dewa as Producer, Lalu Arif Akbar in 3D Animation, Jesica as Project Manager, and Zulian in Motion Design, Romy shaped a shared vision. They wanted to build a studio that is sensitive to detail, willing to experiment, and consistent in pushing working standards within the creative industry. This shared vision became the foundation of Joyfull Studio and continues to guide it today.
Romy’s interest in the visual world emerged at an early age. He began with painting, exploring sketches, gesture, color, and texture through oil and acrylic on canvas. Through this process, he learned how emotion can be conveyed through brushwork and composition. At the same time, photography expanded the way he saw the world. He photographed coastal landscapes in Bintan, then moved into fashion and human interest. Light, emotion, and real world composition became essential lessons in his journey.
His desire to bring these visual foundations into a broader medium led him to study film at the Jakarta Institute of the Arts, focusing on directing. Here, his experiences in painting and photography began to complement one another. “All my previous experiences seemed to find their place in visual storytelling,” he said. From that point, Romy began to seriously pursue his field, particularly in commercial work.
Early in his career, he was closely involved with the social media advertising industry. He worked on commercial videos for lifestyle, sports, and consumer goods brands. He also handled various digital campaigns and social media content needs for small and medium enterprises. These experiences shaped his understanding of visuals that must be relevant, fast, and communicative. This foundation later became a key value of Joyfull Studio, combining strong visual quality with an understanding of the rhythm of the digital ecosystem.
Over time, Romy observed that brand visual needs were becoming increasingly complex, especially in the realm of three dimensional animation and premium visuals. This shift pushed him to study 3D more seriously, from material and lighting to simulation and building product visuals that feel cinematic and aspirational. From the combination of directing experience, brand communication, and technical capability, Joyfull Studio was formed as a creative partner for brands seeking a distinct presence.
In executing a project, Joyfull Studio follows a structured process while leaving room for improvisation. The initial stage always begins with understanding the brand, the audience, and the communication objectives. “This is the most important stage,” Romy said. From there, they look for a point of view that differentiates the work from other visuals in the same category. The process continues into concept development through moodboards, style exploration, and key visuals. Once the concept is defined, the team moves into pre production with storyboards and detailed treatments, followed by production involving modeling, texturing, lighting, simulation, animation, and rendering. The final stage is post production, including editing, color grading, and sound design, to ensure the work feels cohesive and aligned with the original vision.
One of the most technically challenging projects for Joyfull Studio was the Wardah Retinal commercial. Wardah wanted to present a visual approach they had never used before. They envisioned a futuristic laboratory that felt dark, minimal, and modern, with a sensibility closer to avant garde fashion. The research and visual exploration process was intensive, as the team was asked to create a world that remained scientific while also feeling stylish and premium. The challenges included creating materials that felt both scientific and aesthetic, working with dark lux lighting, and maintaining Wardah’s identity within a new visual atmosphere. “There was fear and tension, but that was where we tested our limits,” he said. From this project, Joyfull Studio learned that taking risks often opens up valuable new possibilities.
Looking ahead, Joyfull Studio aims to grow not only as a producer of premium visuals, but also as a strategic partner for brands. Their focus includes strengthening visual identity, developing more efficient production systems, collaborating with local and international brands, and expanding services into high end product videos, 3D cinematics, and brand world building. At the same time, they are opening possibilities for developing visual intellectual property and creative research.
For Joyfull Studio, the creative journey does not begin by waiting for opportunities. “Work comes before reputation,” Romy said. Consistency, a willingness to experiment, and attention to detail are how they build visual character. With the belief that limitations can give rise to an authentic style, Joyfull Studio chooses to build its own doors through work that is relevant and clearly positioned.
