The Graduating Class of Type Design Club 2024

Last Saturday (14/09), this year’s edition of Type Design Club’s Latin Type Text class, the annual intensive type design course initiated by Tegamitype Foundry and The Public Case, concluded with a bang! With the first session held on June 1st, the course encapsulates a total of 16 weeks and 14 sessions. Showcasing the hard work and dedication of this year’s batch of Type Design Club (TDC) participants, an online graduation was held on Zoom to allow each student to thoroughly present their designed typefaces.

This year’s TDC still involved instructors Iqbal Firdaus of Tegamitype Foundry and Aditya Wiraatmaja of The Public Case. The course also involved guest instructors Mint Tantisuwann, a type designer hailing from Thailand, as well as Ritter Willy Putra, Art Director at Thinking*Room and Head of The Indonesian Association of Graphic Designers or ADGI’s Jakarta Chapter. Eleven of the twelve students were able to break down and explain their experience and process with one being a scholarship recipient courtesy of ADGI Jakarta.

The collection of typefaces designed by the participants was quite varied in both design, with serif and sans serif fonts, and purpose, as the students were able to set their own goals for the fonts created—from chess, dinosaur encyclopedias, and the dairy industry. Participants were able to imbue their own passions into their designs. Bakara by Sabika Radjab, who had lived close by to a dairy farm, was designed with the intention to fulfill all the needs of the dairy industry from cow pen identification signs, product packaging, to websites. This typeface was designed to evoke a sense of sharp hand lettering whilst maintaining a minimalist feel.

On the other hand, Marzipan by Rifki Adriarshad is a serif typeface designed specifically to invoke the warmth of cookbooks inspired by typefaces popular in the 1930s. There is also Carla Holy’s sans serif grotesque typeface, ADGI JKT Sans. The typeface designed by ADGI’s TDC scholarship recipient was created specifically to fulfill both the promotional and operational needs of the organization’s Jakarta chapter. Meanwhile, Blackmar by Iqbal Fadillah is a typeface inspired by and targeted towards chess-related media and tournaments. He even demonstrated how the typeface would function in a logo configuration after RItter explained that the Thinking*Room logo can be entirely typed out using their font.

Each and everyone of the participants showcased their design progress from the initial typesketches to the final typefaces, denoting all the gradual changes as the typeface evolves throughout the 14 sessions. Under the guidance of all the instructors, this year’s batch of TDC graduates were able to refine and actualize their ideas as well as sharpen their type design skills. Once again, Type Design Club has positively fostered a budding type design talent pool in Indonesia and their efforts ensure that interest in type design is nurtured. With this edition of TDC coming to a close, we look forward to future editions of Type Design Club to come!
