Exploring Identity and Perception in (Un)certain Behavior by Eko Bintang

Srisasanti Gallery proudly presents (Un)certain Behavior – Tingkah Laku (Tak) Menentu, Eko Bintang's debut solo exhibition with the gallery located at Tirtodipuran Link Building A, Yogyakarta. The exhibition explores unexpected shifts in identity and the influence of perception on these changes through eleven acrylic paintings on linen, six drawings, and a sculpture made of air-dry clay, marking a new approach in Eko’s artistic practice.

As an artist, Eko Bintang’s work embodies lost and rediscovered memories, intertwining feelings of nostalgia with deep introspection. By exploring interpersonal dynamics and discomfort with entrenched social norms, he challenges viewers to question their compliance with unsatisfying situations. His practice investigates the struggles and shortcomings often overlooked in relationships with others and how societal expectations shape and confine personal identity. The figures in Eko’s works emerge from a reflective inquiry into how our perceptions frequently impose predetermined identities on others.

In this solo exhibition, the title (Un)certain Behavior defines the paradox of self-identity by placing the prefix “Un” in parentheses, emphasizing the tension between certainty and uncertainty. This tension mirrors Eko’s contemplative view of self-identity as a continuously evolving process, shaped by both internal and external influences—behavior and appearance. The works in (Un)certain Behavior revolve around four major themes. The first theme explores how appearances and external attributes, such as costumes, shape the perception of identity. The second theme centers on body parts like hands and feet as primary elements in his compositions. The third theme offers a slightly more optimistic perspective, illustrating how flaws can sometimes open unexpected opportunities. The final theme demonstrates how small changes can fragment a single identity into multiple personas.

(Un)certain Behavior is open to the public until February 9, 2025, at Srisasanti Gallery. Exhibition hours are Tuesday to Friday from 12:00 to 19:00 WIB, and Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 to 20:00 WIB.
