Celebrating Graphic Design at ADGI Design Week 2024
ADGI Design Week 2024 officially opened today at Urban Forest Cipete, Jakarta, marking the beginning of a five-day celebration of creativity and innovation in Indonesian graphic design. With the theme "Catalyst," this event highlights the role of graphic design as a driver of change, fostering innovation, strengthening social connections, and advancing various industries. The flagship programs of ADGI Design Week 2024 include inspiring exhibitions such as GRAFIS'24, the Indonesian Graphic Design Museum, Peeling D&AD, and COMPASS® x ADGI, each offering a unique perspective on the power and impact of graphic design.
The main exhibition, GRAFIS'24, showcases works from 66 of Indonesia's top graphic design studios, demonstrating how graphic design serves as a locomotive for the creative economy. GRAFIS'24 curator Diaz Hensuk emphasized the significance of this exhibition: "GRAFIS'24 is more than just an exhibition; it narrates how Indonesian graphic design has evolved into an integral part of cultural and industrial progress. Each work reflects the creativity and resilience of our designers, and we hope this inspires the next generation to continually push boundaries."

Adding depth to ADGI Design Week 2024, the Indonesian Graphic Design Museum explores the history and evolution of graphic design in the country, presenting archives of graphic design from various eras. "This exhibition bridges the past and the present while encouraging us to act for the future. The collected works illustrate how the seeds planted by graphic design pioneers have grown into the thriving industry we see today. It’s a tribute to their vision and a reminder of the vast opportunities ahead," explained Ismiaji Cahyono, Head of the Indonesian Graphic Design Working Group and curator of this exhibition.
The Peeling D&AD exhibition, in collaboration with the international design organization D&AD, brings a global perspective to ADGI Design Week by featuring award-winning works from D&AD 2024. This includes the work of graphic designer Jordan Marzuki, who won the Book Design category. "D&AD celebrates excellence in design and creativity. Through this exhibition, we hope to inspire Indonesian designers to view design from a global perspective while also encouraging all designers to reflect on local creativity and its evolution," said Kotoko Koya, Regional Manager for Japan & Singapore at D&AD.
Innovative cross-sector collaborations are also highlighted in the COMPASS® X ADGI exhibition, which presents works by 25 graphic design studios in partnership with the iconic local footwear brand COMPASS®. "The Compass collaboration with ADGI was initiated to celebrate Compass' 25th anniversary in 2023, resulting in 25 shoe designs created by 25 ADGI member studios. This movement reflects Compass' collective spirit in advancing Indonesia's creative industry, driven by a sense of wildness and freedom," said Aji Handoko, Chief Experience Officer of Compass®.
The opening ceremony of ADGI Design Week 2024 also featured the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Awards to three senior designers whose works and practices have significantly impacted the development of graphic design in Indonesia: Wagiono Sunarto, Hanny Kardinata, and Hermawan Tanzil.
ADGI Design Week 2024 runs from December 11–15, 2024, at Urban Forest Cipete, Jakarta. Visitors can explore exhibitions, engage in inspiring discussions with local and international speakers, and participate in interactive workshops celebrating the dynamic role of graphic design in shaping society and industry.
