Celebrating Its Silver Jubilee, Selasar Sunaryo Art Space Holds SEPEREMPAT ABAD Exhibition

Selasar Sunaryo Art Space (SSAS) is a non-profit cultural institution founded by the artist Sunaryo and officially inaugurated on September 5, 1998, by the Director General of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, the late Prof. Edi Sedyawati. Over the 25 years since its establishment, SSAS has grown into one of the most active art centers in Indonesia. The word "Selasar" describes an open area connecting one space to another. Additionally, it reflects the fundamental purpose of this space to bring art to the public. Activities at SSAS are oriented toward education and generally encompass various artistic disciplines: visual arts, performing arts, architecture, design, film, and literature. To celebrate its silver jubilee, SSAS has prepared a series of programs held throughout the second half of 2023. On September 5, 2023, the Selasar Mimbar featured a cultural speech by an Indonesian astronomer and philosopher, Karlina Supelli, titled "State and Power over the Body." Then, as the highlight of the commemoration, the SEPEREMPAT ABAD exhibition will be held, consisting of four special presentations in the exhibition spaces of SSAS.

The first presentation is Et Cetera by Sunaryo in Room A of SSAS. Twenty-five years ago, Sunaryo wrapped artworks ready for exhibition in black cloth and titled Titik Nadir as an inaugural exhibition at SSAS amid the 1998 crisis. This time, Sunaryo returns to Room A with sculptures, paintings, and monumental installations depicting the trajectory of growth, from the beginning towards the future. This exhibition is curated by Heru Hikayat. The second presentation is XXXV: Archive and Prospect in Room B of SSAS. Curated by Heru Hikayat and Puja Anindita, the exhibition presents a glimpse into the past and future of SSAS. The early part showcases the development and achievements of SSAS through selected archives. The subsequent part of the exhibition maps the journey, designs, and projections of SSAS projects for the next ten years.

Next is Base Matters, a solo presentation by Arin Dwihartanto Sunaryo in Bale Tonggoh SSAS. Curated by Krishnamurti Suparka, this exhibition is built upon artworks, spatial arrangements, and various activities representing Arin's artistic practice, ideas, and vision as an artist. He transforms the space of Bale Tonggoh and converts it into a studio where he works. Several works in this exhibition are pan-sensorial. Arin seeks to expand the reception of artworks with elements of sound and touch. The fourth presentation is Collected Fictions: Notes on Illuminance by Syagini Ratna Wulan in the Wing Room of SSAS. Curated by Yacobus Ari Respati, this exhibition features visual, tactile objects, and sensory stimuli to discuss how art operates through our experiences and knowledge that grows within it. This approach relates to Syagini's previous works, which are spatial, participatory, and explore narratives of contemporary art.

SEPEREMPAT ABAD exhibition also marks an important moment for SSAS, which is regeneration. It's no coincidence that this exhibition features a solo presentation by Arin Dwihartanto Sunaryo alongside Syagini Ratna Wulan as the successors to manage SSAS. Like Sunaryo, each of them is a professional artist with recognized track records domestically and internationally. Opened to the public on November 11, 2023, the SEPEREMPAT ABAD exhibition series will continue with public artist talks at Selasar Sunaryo Art Space and a seminar on art space management held in collaboration with the Bandung Institute of Technology. The entire series of activities in the SEPEREMPAT ABAD exhibition is designed collaboratively by the SSAS team, with Agung Hujatnikajennong as the artistic director. SEPEREMPAT ABAD exhibition event is organized under the guidance and support of the Selasar Sunaryo Foundation (YSS), which oversees Selasar Sunaryo Art Space, Wot Batu, and Selasar Pavilion, with support from Art Jakarta. The exhibitions XXXV: Archive and Prospect, Base Matters, and Collected Fictions: Notes on Illuminance are extended until April 30, 2024.
